West Texas is generally arid and can be very hot. Thus, it’s good to use a variety of low water use plants, trees, and shrubs in your West Texas garden. The art of low water use gardening is also known as xeriscaping. Check out this great site that has a variety of recommended landscape plants for West Texas.

In West Texas, you may also want to implement other water-wise forms of gardening, such as using drip irrigation systems and soaker hoses.

A mistake that a lot of gardeners make in arid areas is to continue to garden as if they were living in lush areas with plenty of rain. If you garden this way, you may end up spending twice the amount of time and money keeping your plants alive than if you grow a garden using low water use plants and xeriscaping techniques.

Another recommendation for gardening in this part of Texas is to use rain barrels to store precious rain water for watering your landscaping.
